Are you looking for a balance between required curriculum and meaningful, fun activities for learn at home opportunities? Find out how to make a simple book-of-pockets to collect just about anything flat and small. Discover possible fillers (several lists will be made available) that can become vehicles for sharing ideas and fun discussions later.
A written tutorial of this book is yours so you can turn around and walk your students or youth through the process for making their own Book of Pockets. The book becomes a kind of field journal for collecting anything from leaves to photos to recipes, etc., with the promise of subtly learning new skills and understandings...while having fun!
It is simple enough for almost any school-age child, and can be sophisticated enough to challenge any creative teen.

Supplies list (Around the House Items, or workable substitute)
Gather these items and have them handy for working at a table/bench near you while we are all in class online.
- Scissors, 4” blade or longer—shorter works, but is more “work”
- Rulers, either 12” OK, or 18” better, plus a 6” ruler for small space measuring
- Bonefolder, OR a standard size Sharpie Pen (works great as substitute!)
- Pencil, sharp (and access to a sharpener) AND Black ballpoint pen
- Scotch tape AND Glue stick, fresh [glides easily; doesn’t drag] – any brand
- Scrap paper for gluing – old catalogs, B&W newspaper, printer mistakes, etc
- Fat thread (any color) or slim twine - about a yard of either
- Decorative papers for embellishing pages, making call-outs, highlights, etc.
- Large buttons – for closures – any color; any shape
- Zip-loc Sandwich Bag for protecting the book on collection ‘field trips’, etc
- Notebook for taking down directions, special effects, gems to remember, etc.
A Class Kit of Supplemental items listed below will be mailed to each registered student – to arrive on or before January 12th.
- Two (2) Sheets of paper Canson’s Sketch Pad 18” x 24” PRE-FOLDED TO 7½X9”
- Large-eyed tapestry needle and a sliced cork to store it in – top and bottom
- Large buttons – for closures – various colors;
- Closure strip of cardstock.
- Two pieces of mat-board (or any heavy-ish board) for covers.

Instructor Bio:
Susan Callan, an instructor of Book Arts at BARN, teaches classes in creativity –cleverly disguised as all things book. She dove into the world of Book Arts during a life-junction about 30 years ago, and never looked back. She continues to be a student, even as she teaches – consistent with her passion for sharing acquired knowledge. The hallmark of her classes is the magical interaction between being creative and having fun.
