About

In this 2 session class you will make a sketchbook or journal that lays perfectly flat, a multiple signature book with a box and learn new useful skills in the process in this engaging, satisfying core class.

This is the first of our Core Bookbinding series and will introduce students to three basic bookbinding techniques: the Coptic stitch (one of the earliest binding structures); Flat-Back Case Binding (hardbound case book); and a Slipcase Box.

In addition to coming away with three finished books made by hand, students will also review the tools and terms of bookbinding. Basic practices and equipment will be discussed as students familiarize themselves with both skills and safety measures needed for working as a bookbinder. Students will learn to use a punching cradle and a sewing frame and the skill of sewing headbands.

Once you learn these three bindings, you will have a very stable knowledge of the book arts. Some bookbinding experience or Book Arts Boot Camp is desired.

An Additional Materials Fee of $15 will be added when you register.

Please bring a bag lunch. A refrigerator, microwave, coffee, and tea are available in the kitchen at BARN.

Instructor: MJ Linford has been a professional book artist for over 20 years, under the press name Bad Girl Press. She also works with three other women under the press name Full Plate Press. Her books are in selected museums, libraries and collections nationwide, and can be seen in the book arts room at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.
