Hori means "to dig" in Japanese, and "hori hori" is the sound the tool makes when it’s being used to dig. But, a hori hori is so much more than a digging tool. It has sharpened edges for cutting needs in the garden and is a popular multi-purpose blade for digging and cutting vegetation. Measuring marks are sometimes found along the blade to help with planting. If you enjoy gardening, or know someone who does, this tool is a must!

You'll be making the this garden knife from 5160 high-carbon steel, which is both flexible and durable — an excellent metal for this knife that can take a good amount of abuse and is easy to sharpen. Like nearly all good tools made of steel, it will need to be cleaned and oiled periodically to avoid rust.

This one-day class will cover the basics of blacksmithing, and is a great way to learn proper forging techniques and hot shop safety.

A $35 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers everything you'll need including the wooden handle. Feel free to provide your own handle material.

Class Policies

• This class is held in an open-air workshop, so dress accordingly.
• Wear natural fiber clothing only (no synthetics that could melt or burn your skin).
• Wear closed-toe shoes or boots. Sandals are not permitted.
• Ages 14 and up are welcome.
