A willow drying basket to hold and preserve the essence of the seasons.  From herbs, flowers, and acorns or any project asking for a woven surface to rest upon. A beauty to hang on the wall or from beams by the hearth.

Round and round we will go - calling on round-work basketry techniques such as making a slath, three and four rod waling, and the french rand. Now, if you read this and say ‘what is a french rand?’ this is not the class for you! Trust me. This basket is for intermediate / intermediate beginner with a strong foundation in weaving a rand.

Details

  • We will play with subtle color shifts and practice working with willow of different varieties and thicknesses to coax the shape of our basket into the desired form which is mostly flat. The drying tray with shallow walls and roped willow handles will be an adventurous final touch with the option for untreated sisal roped handles as well.
  • Willow basket making asks for strength and comfort in the hands and wrists. This particular basket will have us bending over a good amount (with ample breaks for stretching!) so please take this into consideration before signing up for this class.
  • Feel free to bring lunch and snacks to enjoy in the common area during breaks. There is a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level.

Prerequisites

  • Students should have some willow basket weaving experience. This project is for intermediate to beginner-intermediate basket weavers.

Materials

  • A materials fee of $160, included in the price of the class, covers all willow needed for weaving the basket. The willow is hand tended and comes to you from our willow garden in Chimacum, WA.
  • The instructor will provide needed tools but if students prefer to bring their own, registrants will be emailed a tools list prior to class.

Class Policies

  • Ages 18 and up are welcome.

Instructor
Mo Hohmann

Mo is devoted to willow and tending the living tradition of basket weaving. She is a mother, basket maker, teacher, lifelong apprentice of birth, death, burial, and blood mysteries, reverent farmer, and threshold worker providing care for her community in emergent ways through the vessels she weaves. She learned to weave willow baskets in the Coast Range of Oregon and later in Ireland - connecting her craft with the life of plants and ancestors. There she learned about willow, their growing rhythms and patterns, the harvesting and curing of the plant for weaving, and teaching others to weave. Mo is a guest on S’Klallam land in rain shadowed Port Townsend, Washington where cormorants dive and eagles tell glacial memory sky stories with ancestral lines from the west coast of Ireland and Main River lands in Germany.
