Carving spoons is great, but there are plenty of other useful kitchen tools: spatulas, salad tongs, dough hooks, ladles, flour scoops, spaghetti servers, and even knives with custom handles. This five-day class will focus on designing objects and shaping hardwood so you can make tools you'll use and love in your kitchen. You’ll be guided by instructor Dan Webb, a Pacific Northwest local whose stunning carvings have been exhibited in galleries from the Seattle Art Museum to the Smithsonian Museum at the Renwick. 

Everyone, regardless of skill set, will come away with a better understanding of:

• How to rough forms out on a bandsaw.

• How to use and sharpen gouges.

• How to safely carve smaller objects.

• How to design objects that are beautiful and functional. 

You'll come away with at least one finished object (more if you're ambitious).

• Skill level: All. Beginners welcome. All projects are accessible for those who have never carved before. If you’re no longer a beginner, this will expand your skills and expose you to new directions in your woodcarving practice.
• This workshop is part of Handwork 2027 at BARN. 

Materials

• A $50 materials fee, included in the cost of the workshop, covers all the wood you'll need. 
• You're welcome to bring your own carving tools.

Class Policies

• Ages 14 and up are welcome.

• Wear safety glasses and closed-toe shoes, tie back long hair, and avoid loose-fitting clothing and jewelry. We recommend bringing your own safety glasses.
