About

Class series cancelled by Sybil 3-1-2018

This is the first course in a series of three garment construction workshops planned for the Fiber Arts Studio. This first course, "The Kiomi Top" will move students beyond the basic sewing course to develop skills that will allow students to use flat patterns to make clothing.

Course 1 - The Kiomi Top
This will be our first and simplest garment.  In this first course:

  • you will learn how to understand a pattern;
  • create a pattern of the garment that will fit you;
  • learn how to lay out and cut your fabric;
  • use stay stitching, seam finishing, gathering, and bias tape as a finish for the neckline and armholes of the tunic.
  • learn how to modify the tunic pattern to create a dress.
Please purchase the textbook for our class, Everyday Style by Lotta Jansdotter. The book is available at Esther's Fabrics or can be ordered and purchased through Eagle Harbor Books or bought online. BEFORE class please look through your textbook and read page 25 "Sewing Instructions" and read page 131 "Kiomi Top/Dress."

Please click here for "What to Bring To Class".

The book includes five simply designed, loosely fitted garments, with a multitude of variations in styling and fabric that can be used to make a wide variety of garments. The book also contains all the patterns you will need to make the clothing in these 3 courses (top, pants, and jacket) to build yourself a versatile wardrobe. Course 2 on March 27 and 28 will be the pants and Course 3 is April 10 and 11 will be the jacket.

Each of the 3 courses will focus on one of the garments from our textbook, beginning with a sleeveless tunic, followed by making straight legged pants and finishing with constructing a classic coat/jacket.

Don’t worry if you have problems fitting patterns to your perfect shape! We will tailor the patterns to fit you as we develop our garments. Each class in our series will build on skills from the previous class so by the end of our time together you will be able to design a coordinated wardrobe for yourself and construct it as well!

Instructor: Jackie Kelly.  Jackie taught Fashion Design and Construction for 25 years before her retirement.  In the late 70's she worked as a pattern maker for Santa Cruz Imports, had her own line of clothes and ran various fashion shows.  In the 80's Jackie became the manager for Shirley Hyatt Designs in Palo Alto California while having one of her own gowns featured in a Nordstrom's trunk show.  In the 90's Jackie enjoyed a season costuming at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival before moving to Washington State to teach full time.

Jackie continues her love of sewing and fashion by adding to her own wardrobe as well as designing and constructing garments on commission for private customers.
