About

• You will learn the basic principles about designing projects built of wood, and then design your bench.
  
• You will learn to properly square and machine the parts, using power tools including the jointer, planer and table saw.
  
• Working with chisels, hand planes and hand saws, you will cut and fit the joints: dovetails and wedged tenons with through mortises. You will learn to use water stones to sharpen the chisels and plane blades.
• There will not be time in the class for finishing, but you will learn options that you can complete on your own.
  

Details:

• * This class is open to students who have completed our free, one-hour Orientation to the Woodshop class. Dates are listed on the calendar.
  
• Depending on your pace, you may need to work on your project during Open Studio time between class sessions in order to to stay on schedule. These sessions are always free for members. Non-members can also participate at no additional charge while working on the class project. To use specific power tools during Open Studio, you will need to be checked off as having completed safety training for them. The instructor will do that in this class. You can also become certified by taking our Woodshop Tool Safety 1 and Woodshop Tool Safety 2 classes beforehand.
• There will be a half-hour lunch break during the Thursday class. Please bring a sack lunch as there won't be time to go elsewhere. BARN has a refrigerator, microwave, plates and utensils available for your use.
• SPECIAL NOTE: The last session on Monday, February 18th begins at 12:00 PM and will go to 9:00 PM. There will be an hour lunch break on this day.
  

Instructor: Ted Newman studied woodworking and assisted in classes at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine. He is active in BARN's woodworker group and volunteers as a safety monitor.
