About

Hardanger [named for the Hardanger Fjord in Norway] is counted thread embroidery [groups of satin stitches called kloster blocks] with cutwork to create lace-like fabric. The first cutwork embroideries originated in Persia in the 7th century and were modified by the Norwegians around 1790. The traditional lace is worked with ecru thread on an ecru background for costume decoration and for household linens.

Instructor: Janetmarie Valiga, a BARN member and eager student, is a professional writer and artist. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Craft Arts and a Masters’ degree in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College. Janetmarie didn’t encounter Hardanger lace until her parents moved to Poulsbo, “Little Norway,” in 1981; then she soon immersed herself into that Norwegian fiberart.

Her lacemaking is listed in A Directory of Chicago Craftsmen and Artisans. Janetmarie also teaches Beginning Shuttle Tatting lacemaking.

This class is open to anyone 14 and older

Materials Fee: $15.  
The material fees cover all of supplies used in the workshop. 

What Students Need to Bring to Class:
A small pair of embroidery scissors.  If students do not have embroidery scissors, the Instructor has a few for use in the workshop.
