About
If you are comfortable turning “cut rim” bowls, learning to turn natural edge bowls will give you another design element to include in your turnings. You will learn the gouge skills needed to turn the delicate edges of the bowl, how to envision and monitor the shape, and review wood selection and layout for your designs.
In Session 1 you will learn how to mount the green bowl blank to get the best balance, and then proceed to turn the bowl using demonstrated techniques for achieving clean and safe entry cuts to help preserve the bark edge. You will turn to finished wall thickness as you learn techniques that produce consistency in this process.
In Session 2 you will learn about selecting logs and laying out cuts for various design considerations. You will also learn various mounting options for turning both the inside and outside of the bowl, and then proceed to turn your second bowl. Bowls not finished during class may be completed during Open Studio.
The bowls you turn will need to finish drying before being sanded with a flexible sanding pad and a drill, or by hand.

Materials
A $30 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers everything you'll need.
Prerequisites
REQUIRED:
- You must have taken Intro to Woodturning and Intro to Bowl Turning, or demonstrated equivalent lathe safety and turning skills during a private studio session, which you can arrange by contacting Jamie Straw through registrar@bainbridgebarn.org at least 10 days before this class.
- You must have turned several bowls and be comfortable with the process.

Wear safety glasses and closed-toe shoes, tie back long hair, and avoid loose-fitting clothing and jewelry. We recommend bringing your own safety glasses.

Instructors or Guides
Timothy Larson
Tim Larson started turning wood in May of 2020. In a very short period of time, he rapidly fell in love with all aspects of woodturning. He turns
everything from tops to bowls, balustrades, boxes, and mini-goblets and excels in multi-axis turning and use of a skew and a French bedan. He also
makes and sells custom bass guitars, where the necks are turned on a lathe.
Tim is the former President of OPCAAW, a local chapter of the American Association of Woodturning, has taught woodturning classes for more than
three years, and currently serves as a mentor and VP of Training and Education. He feels fortunate that, as a videographer for AAW, he has had unique access to some of the best woodturning artists in the world.
