Important Notice: Students must have completed the prerequisites listed below.
Learn how to make a basic segmented bowl and discover the resources for making more sophisticated designs for this amazing craft.
- Session 1: Learn how to calculate the size and shape of the various segments and how to cut the segments on a jig.
- Session 2: Assemble and sand the segments accurately to size, and glue up the segment rings in preparation for turning.
- Some studio time may be required between Session 2 and Session 3
- Session 3: Turn and finish the assembled bowl.
Successful completion of these sessions will give you a basic understanding how to design, assemble and turn a basic segmented bowl. Segmenting skills are applicable to bowls, hollow forms and spindles, and are limited only by your imagination!
Details
- Skill level: You must have basic bowl-turning skills.
- Dale Nish’s book "Woodturning with Ray Allen" is used for the class and provides a glimpse into the possibilities of segmented turning.
Materials
Prerequisites
- Intro to Bowl Turning or equivalent skills as certified by Jamie Straw.
- Wood Lathe Tool Sharpening.
- You need to have turned two or three bowls independent of instruction to be comfortable in this class.
