About

This is an introduction to line drawing, observation skills, positive-negative spaces, and shading over four weekly evening sessions. Every session starts with short, fun, warm-up drawing exercises.

Session 1: Line drawing and observation skills
You'll see some fun examples from the art world, and experiment with drawing objects using blind drawing, upside-down drawing, and contour drawing techniques with pencil on paper.

Session 2: Positive-negative spaces and expanding observation skills
Practice recognizing positive-negative spaces in examples from the art world, nature, and our immediate environment. And practice translating your observations into drawing, using pencils and charcoal.

Session 3: Shading techniques
Look at some examples of techniques from the art world, and experiment with different techniques using pens and a variety of pencils. You'll practice progressing from line work to form to volume of still-life objects with dramatic shading, incorporating all the previously learned techniques.

Session 4: Shading with black and white paints
Expand your shading techniques and learn to mix black and white paints to create a grayscale chart as you continue to experiment with still-life drawing and painting with dramatic shading.

A materials fee of $25, included in the price of the class, covers everything you will need.

Artist statement
As an artist, I believe that art is a powerful mode of communication that goes beyond words. My passion for architecture and music, coupled with my travels, has instilled in me a deep interest in understanding how human beings experience and interact with their environment. For me, every painting is a new adventure in discovering unique ideas, concepts, and techniques; each artwork tells a different story and presents both intellectual and practical challenges. Through my art, I strive to explore the depths of the human experience and bring new perspectives to light.
