About
David Franklin, the artist behind the stunning 12-foot "Arm of the Kraken" cedar sculpture at the Bainbridge ferry terminal, will discuss his remarkable career and show some of his work at this free presentation, which is open to all.
After an early career as an aircraft mechanic, David immersed himself in Pacific Northwest arts, completing a pivotal 10-year apprenticeship with renowned woodcarver Duane Pasco, who before his death in August 2024 had been recognized by the Smithsonian as a leading authority on Northwest Coast Native art traditions.
David's impressive portfolio spans large-scale public art installations across the country. His work has earned multiple Public Art Network Awards and has been exhibited internationally, including at Milan's prestigious Design Week. He's shared his expertise as an instructor at the University of Washington, Pratt Fine Arts Center, and the Marc Adams School of Woodworking. His innovative work has twice earned him residencies at the Kohler Arts/Industry program, where he later became their first "Makerspace" resident.
Currently based in Indianola, David continues to push the boundaries of his craft. His latest installation, "The Once and Forever Lake Michigan," showcases his mastery of both traditional and contemporary techniques. It features slip-cast vitreous china crafted from hand-carved wooden originals. To explore David's work and remarkable journey, visit davidfranklinart.net.
The monthly woodworkers' presentation is open to all — you don't need to be a woodworker. Coffee and refreshments will be provided. No registration is required.
Please note: This event, on the third Saturday of January, is a change from the usual woodworkers' monthly presentation schedule. In February, presentations will return to being on the second Saturday of the month.
