About

Explore the centuries-old craft of chip carving, which can be used to decorate everything from bread boards to paddles to furniture.

Chip carving dates back to the time of the Vikings and has been featured in the folk arts of many countries. This style of woodcarving uses small, repetitive, and precise cuts to create geometric or other designs on the surface of wood.

In this class, you will learn about the specialty knives used in chip carving, how to use them safely, and how to keep the blades sharp. You will make a chip carving that you can hang on a wall, use as a trivet or turn into a lid for a box.

Materials

A $25 materials fee, included in the class fee, covers everything you need, including a chip carving knife that you will own and take home for future projects, plus basswood for practice cuts and your project.

Prerequisites
