About

Learn the art of relief printing in this simple beginner workshop. You'll use battleship gray linoleum as your block and create a one-color design to be printed onto cards. You'll also learn how to embellish the cards with decorative paper and collage to add color and more festive elements.

You will learn:

  • How to create an image appropriate for block printing.
  • Safe carving techniques.
  • How to ink your block.
  • Proper set up of the studio’s etching press.
  • How to print using the press.
  • How to register/align your cards so your image prints where you want it to.
  • Collage and embellishment techniques.
  • A brief history of relief printmaking.
  • Studio cleanup procedures.

We’ll end with a show-and-tell of everyone’s work. You'll leave with the block you carved and the skills to print additional cards in the future.

Details

  • You're encouraged to bring ideas, sketches, and images of what you’d like to carve onto your block. Blocks are four inches by six inches.
  • Bring a lunch. There's a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level.

Project

A set of printed cards made using a linoleum block you carved.

Materials

A $15 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers everything you'll need.

Dana Seeger

Dana Harris Seeger was born in San Francisco and split her childhood between California and Indiana. She pursued her passion in high school and college and received a bachelor's degree in painting from Anderson University in Indiana in 2004 and a master's in fine arts in printmaking from San Jose State University in 2011. She is a member of the California Society of Printmakers. In 2014, Dana co-created an art studio and school in San Jose, Calif., called the School of Visual Philosophy. Her work in printmaking and painting helps her connect real to imagined memories and her life experiences to her heritage. Growing up as a second-generation Baltic American, she has always tried to connect the artifacts acquired from Estonia and Latvia into her own story. She lives in Poulsbo with her husband (a sculptor), daughter, and twin sons.
