About
This focused Open Studio, with a trained safety monitor always on duty, is for enameling only. Enameling is the process of fusing powdered glass to another surface such as metal, at high heat.
Details
- You won't have access to any other tools or equipment.
- No formal instruction is given.
- Do all your metal prep before attending this Open Studio.
- If no one has shown up by the end of the first hour, the monitor may close the studio. If you know you’ll arrive more than an hour after the start time, email the registrar by 11:59 PM the day before.
Materials
- A $12 materials fee, which is the cost of attending this Open Studio for members, covers everything you'll need.
- Please bring a towel for cleanup.
Prerequisites
- You must have completed Intro to Enameling: Opaques.
- A Jewelry Studio skills card is required. To get a skills card, you need to take an introductory jewelry class such as Introduction to Jewelry: Skills Class, Introduction to the Jeweler's Torch, Introduction to Lapidary, Introduction to Enamel, or Introduction to Beading Skills.
- Jewelers with previous experience can request a skills assessment by emailing jewelry.programming@bainbridgebarn.org
Class Policies
- Ages 14 and up are welcome.
- Wear closed-toe shoes and natural-fiber clothing.
- Do not wear loose or synthetic-fiber clothing, dangling jewelry, scarves, or ties.
- Tie back long hair in ponytail or bun.

Instructors or Guides
Karen Olch
Karen was born and raised in Pasadena, Calif., and graduated from the Los Angeles County College of Nursing. She earned her bachelor's degree from Chapman College and was an operating room nurse and manager at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles until she married Christopher Olch, a Navy medical officer, in 1985. They lived in Maryland, California, Connecticut, and Japan before being transferred to the Pacific Northwest. They settled in Kitsap County in 1997 and on Bainbridge Island in 2017. Their adult son, Matthew, is a video game animator in the Seattle area.
Karen has always loved to look at and collect jewelry, so when she took her first class in BARN's Jewelry Studio, she was hooked. She understands the importance of organization and working together to provide an atmosphere of safety, judicious use of resources, and enjoyment of the creative processes in crafting jewelry.
