About

Explore the art of relief printing in this workshop for beginners and intermediate print makers. You'll use battleship linoleum (so named because it often was used for ship decks in the early 1900s) as your block and create a design with two or three colors using the "jigsaw" technique. This method is economical for printmakers since you only use one block, but also stretches your creativity because you literally cut up your block into pieces that are inked separately and then "jigsawed" back together.

You will learn:

  • How to create an image appropriate for block printing.
  • Safe carving techniques.
  • How to ink your block.
  • Proper set up of the studio’s etching press.
  • How to print using the press.
  • A brief history of relief printmaking.
  • An overview of different multicolor printing techniques, with an emphasis on the jigsaw method
  • Studio clean up procedures.

We'll end with a show-and-tell of everyone's work.
