About

Create a series one-of-a-kind prints in this multi-media extravaganza! You'll learn the art of monotype printmaking in which oil-based inks are applied to a plexiglass plate and run through the press to transfer the image to the paper. You'll also explore incorporating a variety of techniques to add interesting elements to your prints, including but not limited to:

  • Chine collé: A technique in which you glue/collage pieces of paper into your larger print using the press.
  • Image transfer: Transferring an image printed using a toner onto your print. Laser printers and most photocopy machines use toner.
  • Hand coloring: Painting and drawing directly onto prints to enhance them.

Throughout the day, students will learn the history of monotype and watch demonstrations of numerous techniques.

Details

  • Skill level: All. For beginners, it's a good introduction to working with the press. For those with printmaking experience, it provides a wide range of multi-media techniques to build skills.
  • You're welcome to bring design ideas to class. Our prints will be 8 inches by 10 inches, or 9 inches by 12 inches.
  • You're encouraged to bring images printed using toner from a laser printer or photocopy machine that you'd like to transfer onto your print.
  • You're also welcome to bring paper you'd like to incorporate into your prints through chine collé. The studio will also provide a range of papers you can choose from.
  • Bring a lunch. BARN has a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level.

Dana Seeger

Dana Harris Seeger was born in San Francisco and split her childhood between California and Indiana. She pursued her passion in high school and college and received a bachelor's degree in painting from Anderson University in Indiana in 2004 and a master's in fine arts in printmaking from San Jose State University in 2011. She is a member of the California Society of Printmakers. In 2014, Dana co-created an art studio and school in San Jose, Calif., called the School of Visual Philosophy. Her work in printmaking and painting helps her connect real to imagined memories and her life experiences to her heritage. Growing up as a second-generation Baltic American, she has always tried to connect the artifacts acquired from Estonia and Latvia into her own story. She lives in Poulsbo with her husband (a sculptor), daughter, and twin sons.
