About
Anyone can learn and have fun with fabric collage. You'll use a fusible material called Steam A Seam 2 — a heat-activated, pressure-sensitive fusible material — to all your fabric. Then you'll cut out pieces, play with color, and place them on the pattern. When you're pleased with your collage, you'll fuse the pieces in place with an iron. A machine- sewn grid can be added later to make it permanent, if you like.
Laura Heine is an artist and author and founder of the quilt shop Fiberworks in Billings, Mont. She's known for her quilting techniques and use of color.
Come join the fun!
Details
- Experience level: Suitable for beginners with no sewing experience.
- The short session on Friday, held in the Fiber Arts Studio, will be used to press your fabric and adhere the Steam a Seam to it. The Pattern Ease (a non-woven tracing material made of polyester and rayon, making it strong, durable, and less likely to tear) will be used during this class, as well.
- With the fabric prepared on Friday, you'll use Saturday and Sunday to create your collage. You should leave on Sunday with a completed project.
- There will be no sewing in class, but you may want to sew your collage later at your convenience. The instructor will go over how to do this during class.
Materials
A $20 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, provides you with three yards of Steam a Seam 2 and one yard of Pattern Ease. You will receive them from the studio.
You need to bring the following to the class:
- A "Teeny Tiny" series pattern from Laura Heine Fiberworks. Their size (about16 inches by 20 inches) makes them easy to work on in a limited space and large enough to make the fabric cutting easy. Due to copyright laws, NO reproduced copies will be allowed in the class.
- A Laura Heine Teeny Tiny fabric kit or equivalent quantities of similar fabrics of your choice. See patterns on her website for yardage details.
- Silicone fusing mat.
- Applique pressing sheet.
- Sharp, small scissors for cutting out detailed shapes.
If you have any questions about the materials, email instructor Susan Davis at susankay@wavecable.com.
