About
Shoji, the elegant sliding doors found in traditional Japanese homes, typically feature an intricate wooden lattice screen covered with white paper. Modern versions sometimes replace the white paper with prints of cherry blossoms, waves or other images. Len Cullum also makes shoji with wave designs in his Seattle shop. But the wave shapes aren't printed on paper; they are part of the intricate wooden lattice.
At the BARN woodworkers' monthly presentation for June, Cullum will discuss the thought process and design of his "The Wave" screen and the steps needed to make it. You can see more images of the project on his website.
In addition to building shoji screens and Japanese-style garden structures, architectural elements, doors, and furniture, Cullum also has written several articles for publication. His most recent, about building a box-style tansu using pinned finger joints and shop-made copper hardware, was the cover story for the March-April issue of Fine Woodworking magazine.
