About

Learn some of what an architect considers when designing a home, and make a scale model that incorporates details you might want in your own starter home.

You'll focus on making models of tiny houses that have flair and demonstrate how small, affordable spaces can shine with great design. The instructor, a retired architect with numerous awards for modern house designs, considers the development of options for tiny houses important because they're a new building type that you may wind up choosing for yourself.

Using an architect's scale and a T-square, you'll draw the pieces to a scale of 1/2" to 1' on 3/16"-thick plywood. Then you'll cut the parts using a bandsaw, scroll saw, and hand saws. You'll also make to-scale windows and doors. After sanding the parts, you'll assemble your model with wood glue, using tape as temporary clamps. The roof will lift off, giving access to the interior. You'll also make and install interior components.

Warren Pollock

Warren, a retired architect with more than 100 completed building projects in five countries, has a lifelong interest in art, architecture, and design. His work includes single- and multi-family housing projects, office buildings, commercial structures, retail, and educational buildings. Warren has used models to study and develop his building and furniture designs. "Build a small one before you build a big one.”

He opened his architecture office in Seattle in 1977 and, in 2017, retired from architecture and moved to Bainbridge Island with his wife, Ginger. Since joining BARN, he has designed and built more than 25 projects including tables, chairs, cutting boards, a grandfather clock, work stations for the jewelry studio, and several pieces on commission. He also does large-format drawings with India ink and colored pencil on watercolor paper. His work has been shown at a local gallery and at the Bainbridge Island First Friday Art Walk.
