About

Create your own tree sampler using appliqué and embroidery on wool. You'll choose a basic color scheme to work with, then appliqué pieces down, and finally, learn embroidery stitches to create texture and depth and give your tree sampler personality. The instructor will supply a drawn diagram for you to place your own design of stitches into.

You'll select a color scheme for your wool leaves, create a design, pin, and whip-stitch — anchoring all pieces in place.

You'll learn and explore design using the following:

  • Back stitch
  • Couching stitch
  • Double cast-on stitch
  • Fly stitch
  • French knot
  • Pekinese stitch
  • Raised cup stitch
  • Trellis stitch

Details

  • You may need additional time at home to complete the sampler.
  • The first day of class will be held in the Small Classroom, and the second day will be held in the Fiber Arts Studio.
  • Bring a bag lunch each day. There is a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level.

Project

You will create your own 9" x 11" tree sampler using appliqué and embroidery.

Materials

A materials fee of $25, included in the cost of the class, covers a materials kit that includes:

  • A drawn and labeled diagram of the piece with stitches
  • A 9” x 11” piece of wool with needle turned down, trunk in place
  • Ten wool leaves of three different shapes to create your own design layout
  • Three needles (#18, #24 chenille and #1 milliners)
  • Variety of threads for embroidery
  • Appliqué pins
  • Needle threader

A small pillow for cast-on and wrap stitches will be provided by the instructor to use during class.

Nathalee Lowrie

Nathalee Lowrie’s passion for textiles began as a child, learning textile arts from both of her grandmothers. Using a needle and thread fueled an instant love affair with color, the suppleness of fabric, and the movement of a needle. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in education/art specialization from North Texas University. She also trained at the Madeline Island School of the Arts in Wisconsin, studying under Sue Spargo and Katie Pasquini Masopust. Her pieces have been accepted into several juried shows and galleries.
