About
Sewing your own jeans doesn't have to be scary or hard. Instructor "Jeans Queen" Lauren Taylor will show you just how easy (and fun) it can be!
You'll learn using the Ginger Jeans from Closet Core Patterns (available in sizes 0-32 / 33- to 63-inch hip), classic high-rise jeans made with stretch denim. You'll have the option of making either the stovepipe or skinny leg version of the pattern. We'll go over everything you need to know to make a professional-looking pair of jeans, such as choosing the correct size, basic fitting adjustments, tips for accurate topstitching, serged seam finishes, an easy fly-front zipper, and installing all that hardware! We'll kick off the weekend with a half day to choose your size (we'll have pre-made Ginger Jeans samples you can try on), and then cut and mark your denim. Construction will begin on Saturday and continue through the weekend. You'll leave with a new pair of jeans and the knowledge and empowerment to make more on your own!
Details
- Skill Level: Intermediate (or adventurous beginners with a little experience under their belt). Prior sewing experience is required. You must be comfortable threading and operating a sewing machine, and have sewn at least one garment pattern.
- The focus is on jeans construction, not fit. We'll go over very basic fitting adjustments but not beyond.
- Bring a sack lunch each day (you won't have time to leave for lunch). There is a refrigerator and microwave on the lower level.
- Cancellation requests received prior to noon on Friday, July 12, will be eligible for a refund minus a 15% cancellation fee. Cancellation fee for members is $114, and for guests is $148.
- There are only 12 spots available, so this class will fill very quickly. Click on "Wait List" (there is no charge to do so). Should there be a cancellation, you'll be notified via email. The available spot will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
- There are a limited number of sewing machines available to use in the studio. If you'd like to use a BARN sewing machine rather than bringing your own, reserve it when you register by checking the box "Sewing Machine Reservation."
Materials
All materials can be purchased through Esther's Fabrics with a 15% discount, instructions for redeeming the discount will in your confirmation email.
Students should bring:
- Closet Core Patterns Ginger Jeans (sizes 0-32). If you prefer a mid rise, you may purchase the add-on option available on the Closet Core website (we won't have time in class to make design changes to the pattern). Male students may substitute the Quadra or Fulford jeans by Thread Theory. Please do not substitute any other jeans patterns for what is recommended here.
- 2-3 yards of 55-inch-wide, 8.5-11.4 ounce stretch denim (a 4-inch piece of washed denim should stretch to between 4.25 and 5 inches). The amount of yardage you require will depend on your size, and narrower yardages will require additional yardage (contact sewing.coordinator@bainbridgebarn.org if you have questions).
- 1/2 yard of sturdy cotton for pockets.
- 1/8 yard (60 inches) or 1/4 yard (22 inches) lightweight fusible interfacing (recommended: Pro-WEFT Supreme Lightweight fusible or Fusible Tricot Interfacing).
