About

This month’s woodworkers meeting will be at the Bainbridge Island Rowing Club’s new facility on the waterfront behind Town & Country Market at 281 Brien Drive SE. The meeting will start promptly at 9 am on Saturday, Jan. 13.

Members of the BI Rowing Club will discuss our island’s connection to the now-famous story of "The Boys in the Boat." Also on display will be the authentic George Pocock racing shell that BARN woodworkers helped the Rowing Club restore as a community service project back in 2019.

The Quinault was designed and built in 1949 by legendary boat builders George and Stan Pocock. George founded the boat-building company Pocock Racing Shells and figured prominently in the events described in the book and film. Stan worked shoulder-to-shoulder with his father and was a peerless coach, taking eight different crews to the Olympics between 1956 and 1964. The Quinault carried a team of University of Washington freshman rowers to a national championship in 1951, beating a team that later went on to win Olympic Gold.

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn more about this chapter of our local and regional history. As always, coffee and snacks will be available.
