About

Make three 18” x 18” decorative pillows, each with different edge trims: fabric welt, twisted cord, and brush fringe. Learn professional tips for joining trim ends invisibly, sewing these different trims so they look their best, and hand sewing pillows closed.  

Details

There are a limited number of sewing machines available to use in the studio. If you'd like to use a BARN sewing machine rather than bringing your own, be sure to reserve it when you register for the class by checking the box labelled "Sewing Machine Reservation."

Materials

You need to bring:

  • 4 yards of fabric total: 2 yards for pillow with fabric welt, and 1 yard for each of two additional pillows.
  • 2 1/2 yards of twisted cord
  • 2 1/2 yards of brush fringe
  • 3 yards of plain flannel or plain cotton for underlining pillows
  • Three 18”x18” pillow stuffers
  • Bring your sewing machine (or use a BARN machine) along with scissors, rulers, and hand-sewing needles and thread to match or coordinate with your fabrics.

  • Age 14 and up are welcome.
  • Bring a bag lunch. A refrigerator and microwave are available downstairs.

Laurel Sprigg
Sewing

Laurel Sprigg brings 30 years of experience running a premier, high-end residential drapery workroom in San Francisco. She has collaborated with many top designers over the years to create beautiful and durable window treatments in fine houses in California, Idaho, Colorado, Oregon, and Hawaii. Known for the best quality sewing, Laurel has made all kinds of curtains, shades, bed covers, pillows, table covers, and slip covers. She has written articles for Threads magazine on pillows and slip covers and has taught textile history and textile applications for interiors for the University of California at Berkeley Extension Interior Design and Architecture Program. She has lectured for the San Francisco Design Center, Academy of Art College, and the College of Alameda Design and Merchandising Program.
