About
Learn how to do overlay mosaic crochet, one of the most straight-forward crochet colorwork techniques. Specifically, you'll learn:
- New crochet stitches (back-loop-only single crochet and front-loop-only double crochet)
- How to read mosaic crochet color charts
- How to change colors in mosaic crochet
- How to deal with all the loose ends produced by mosaic crochet
You'll learn the stitches first, and then practice your new skills while creating a coaster.
Skill level: BeginnersProject
Materials
- Download a copy of the Spirit Mosaic 4 Coaster pattern by Elizabeth Ragsdale, available for $2 on Ravelry, here.
- You'll need approximately 15 yards each of three colors of fingering weight yarn. One should be a light color for the background, while the other two should be contrasting solid colors. Please don't bring black yarn as one of your colors. This technique requires you to pick up individual strands of yarn with your hook, and it is very difficult to see black yarn.
- You'll need an appropriately sized crochet hook and a pair of scissors. A 3.5mm or 3.75mm hook should work well for fingering weight. Other weights of yarn also can be used, as long as all three colors are the same weight. If you use a heavier weight, your coaster will be bigger, and you'll need to use a larger hook.
Prerequisites
Crochet 101 or other previous crochet experience. You should know the basic crochet stitches, especially chain stitch and single and double crochet. You should also know how to start with a slip knot and how to fasten off.
