About

Important Notice: Students must have completed the prerequisites listed below.

Learn how to make a basic segmented bowl and discover the resources for making more sophisticated designs for this amazing craft.

  • Session 1: Learn how to calculate the size and shape of the various segments and how to cut the segments on a jig.
  • Session 2: Assemble and sand the segments accurately to size, and glue up the segment rings in preparation for turning.
  • Some studio time may be required between Session 2 and Session 3
  • Session 3: Turn and finish the assembled bowl.

Successful completion of these sessions will give you a basic understanding how to design, assemble and turn a basic segmented bowl. Segmenting skills are applicable to bowls, hollow forms and spindles, and are limited only by your imagination!

Details

  • Skill level: You must have basic bowl-turning skills.
  • Dale Nish’s book "Woodturning with Ray Allen" is used for the class and provides a glimpse into the possibilities of segmented turning.
