About

Learn the endlessly creative exploration of surface design on textiles! This is a beginner-friendly class for anyone who would love to learn the art of block printing and creating repeat patterns on textiles. It's the slowest process of printing and, once mastered, quite rewarding, showing the artisan’s touch. These techniques date back to ancient civilizations but still stand the test of time in their popularity.

We'll begin by designing a unique and simple motif within the confines of a small square, which will then be carved, followed by a discussion of mixing pigments and the various ways of printing, registering, and repeating motifs on fabric. Then the fun part — testing and printing your design to create various repeat patterns. Demonstrations will help guide you through the entire process all the way through heat-setting.

This class is for those who love the idea of creating their own textile designs, whether you’ve done block printing before or not. Easy-to-understand techniques and skill building of the process will be provided. You'll take home your own hand-printed test prints and a bandana with your unique design as well as the skills to continue exploring the process on their own. Sewing will not be a part of the instruction but suggestions may be offered.

Christa Schoenbrodt

Christa, a life-long Middle Tennessean, has lived a life of creativity. Surrounded by family members who were always stitching something – whether clothing, quilts, or embroidery – her creative expression was often more about exploring fine art. Paper was often her preferred surface not only as a printmaker but as a graphic design studio owner (Studio Haus). Then she learned the artistry of block-printing repeat patterns and textile design, using skills that merged perfectly with her design sensibilities. The slower and more experimental pace of hand-printing repeat patterns presented great surprises and opportunities to accept the “imperfections” inherent in the process. She now works with textiles using not only block-printing processes but also silkscreen, digital design, cyanotype, and mixed media techniques.
