About
It seems every bladesmithing student asks if they can make a sword. While the answer is "Yes!" you must first learn forge fundamentals and this butter knife project is a great place to start. Learn the basics of steel identification and how carbon and alloys affect steel and its ability to perform as a blade. You'll learn basic concepts in heat treatment and tempering by running colors, discussing basic edge geometry, and learning about proper filing methods. Power tools won't be used.
These skills help you become a better and more proficient blacksmith. Introductory classes are for everyone. Whether you have never stood near a blazing forge or you're a bit seasoned, these classes have something to offer regardless of your experience. Beginning classes are designed to teach very specific blacksmithing safety and techniques, while familiarizing students with forging equipment. Introductory classes focus on hammering skills, while you learn to draw, taper, and upset (a more sophisticated forging technique that makes metal thicker, shorter, and narrower) your projects. You make your own version of the projects. Blacksmithing is simple but not easy. Come and enjoy a day at the forge but do be careful, this ancient art is very addictive!
