About
Log cabin quilts have been around since the mid-1800s, becoming popular in 1863 when they were raffled off by the Union Army to raise money for the Civil War.
Learn the techniques and gain the experience of making this style quilt in a class designed to be fun as we all work on the same basic block in many different colorways and many different layouts for a variety of quilts at the end. Each class session will be followed with homework so we can all stay on track together.
We'll first discuss the value and size of the quilt you'd like to make. From there we'll set out on a field trip to a fabric store to get help picking fabrics for the most eye-pleasing results (this is voluntary and purchases aren't the responsibility of the BARN). If you have a 100% cotton, focus fabric you'd like to build from, please bring it with you to this session.
In the second session, we'll discuss directional cutting, "fussy" cutting, labeling, and assembly of a block.
In the third session, you'll assemble the blocks enjoying a wide variety of options, and take on sandwiching the finished top to the back and batting.
Finally, the last session will focus on discussion, and starting the process of marking and finishing the quilt through machine quilting or slow stitching.
Details
- Experience level: Being a “confident beginner” or beyond is a must. You need to know how to sew a 1/4-inch seam and use a rotary cutter safely. Contact the studio at sewing.coordinator@bainbridgebarn.org if you have questions about the experience needed.
- You'll need a sewing machine for all but the first class session. You may bring your own, or reserve one of BARN's when you register.
