In this two-part introductory class, you'll learn the basics of dyeing wool yarn with acid dyes, a non-caustic type of synthetic dye activated by simple white vinegar or citric acid. You'll learn essential safety procedures, planning colorways, making dye stocks, and how to use them. You'll be introduced to the hand-painting method, which is an easy, fun, and versatile dye style that's perfect for beginners.
During the workshop, you'll engage in guided color play to create your own unique skein of hand-painted yarn.

Session 1
- The basics of dye safety.
- How acid dyes work.
- How to plan a successful colorway.
- The instructor will demonstrate the process of dyeing a skein.
Session 2
Get your (gloved) hands dirty, and dye your own yarn! You'll hand-paint a skein of fingering weight superwash merino. This technique gives you the chance to really play with the color while learning about dye stocks and how to use them.

- Skill Level: Beginner
- Due to the nature of dyeing, there may be some down time while waiting for dye to set. If you want to play with more colors during that time, additional materials kits will be available for purchase for $15 (does not include respirator). Or, feel free to bring another project to work on while you wait.
Materials
A $15 materials fee, included in the cost of the class, covers all the dyes, yarn, masks, and gloves needed for the class.
Class Policies
- Ages 14 and up are welcome.
- N95/KN95 or similar masks will be provided. Masks are required when dry dye powders are in use in the lab.
- Dress for a mess! Dyeing can be a messy process and dyes can stain. Wear dark colors or something you don't mind getting stained and (optionally) bring an apron.
- Closed-toe shoes are required in the dye lab.

Dyeing
Ship (she/her) is an indie dyer from the Pacific Northwest who gets inspiration for yarn colorways from her fandoms! Most of her inspiration comes from anime, video games, and other nerdy things. Some of her favorite fandoms to dye yarn for are: Final Fantasy XIV, Voltron: Legendary Defender, Genshin Impact, Critical Role, and Studio Ghibli Films. Ship has been dyeing yarn since 2018, crocheting since 2010, and more recently picked up knitting and weaving. She has always loved sharing her passions with others, whether that is screaming about the things she loves, or teaching others how to create.
When not doing yarn crafts, Ship can usually be found playing video games, watching anime, playing with her dogs, drawing, or picking up new random crafting skills. She is a huge proponent of online communities for both fandom and craft and runs a Discord community of nerdy crafters, and participates in many fandom communities as well.
